Author Susan Schuyler Walker

Hello. I am a graduate of SUNY Oneonta and Bread Loaf School of English, Middlebury College, and am a retired English teacher, editor, technical writer, and curriculum developer. An active member of my local Audubon chapter, I enjoy birding and am also an amateur naturalist and avid long-distance bicyclist.

I live in Sandy, Utah, with my husband Jeffrey, a retired professor of English. After my husband retired from Oklahoma State University, we moved to Utah from Stillwater, Oklahoma, April 1st, 2021, having lived in Stillwater 42 years.

We have two beautiful daughters for whom my first book, The Snarl the Cob, & the Pflug, was originally written. For years, the manuscript for The Snarl languished in a drawer, out of sight and out of mind. But then I found Hannah Tuohy, my first illustrator. I  collaborated with Hannah to create the picture books that star our house cats Ted and Pad, and through Hannah discovered Amazon's CreateSpace.

In 2018, CreateSpace merged with Kindle and became Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing. KDP, like CreateSpace, provides a platform and help to authors like me who wish to independently publish either a Kindle book, paperback, or hardback

I am what is known as an "Indie" author, which means that my books are created by me, independent of a publishing house. I design and create the books myself, using my editing background and the tools available on Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing.

I collaborated with illustrator Joni Nemeth to create The Tale of Ridley's Tail  picture book and the graphic novel Trapped at the Top: Pika Pete's Plea for Help.  Obviously, Hannah and Joni are responsible for the lion's share of the effort that goes into these books where the illustrations, as well as the text, tell the story.

Kindle Direct Publishing is an "on-demand" Amazon service, meaning that when the buyer orders the book, a copy is printed and mailed. This print-on-demand method cuts out the risk that publishers take when they print and warehouse say, 1000 books of one title, and then must advertise and scramble to sell those books to make up their expenses. Check out all of my Amazon books under my author name Susan Schuyler Walker. (Pardon and scroll past any ads that pop up with this URL!)

I have also published two non-fiction books for adults: Childhood on the Schoharie, a memoir of my childhood years until high school, and Coast When Ya Kin: 30 Years Behind Bars, an account of my love of long-distance bicycling journeys in which I crossed the U.S. on my bicycle four times, cycled the Mississippi and Danube Rivers, cycled the west and east coasts, and cycled Alaska and Newfoundland.

All of my books are available in paperback or Kindle. Trapped at the Top is also available in hardback. Each of my titles is described, rated, and available on demand through amazon.com.

If you order and read some of these books to your children or grandchildren or if you read the adult travel book or memoir, please help me promote my titles by reviewing them on amazon.com. Thank you!
